The Short Version
- We only collect what we need to provide the service
- Your documents are processed securely and deleted automatically
- We never sell your data or share it with advertisers
- You can delete your data anytime
What Data We Collect
We collect only what's necessary to provide and improve OpenClauses:
Information you provide
- Account information: Email address and password when you create an account
- Documents: Contracts you upload or paste for analysis
- Feedback: Messages you send us through the feedback form
Information collected automatically
- Usage data: Pages you visit, features you use, and general interaction patterns
- Device information: Browser type, operating system, and screen size
- Log data: IP address, timestamps, and error logs for debugging
What we don't collect: We don't use tracking cookies for advertising, and we don't collect personal information beyond what you explicitly provide.
How Your Documents Are Processed
Your documents are handled with care. Here's exactly what happens when you upload a contract:
- Upload: Your document is transmitted over an encrypted connection (HTTPS/TLS)
- Processing: Our system extracts the text and sends it to our AI for analysis
- Analysis: The AI identifies clauses, explains them in plain English, and flags potential risks
- Display: Results are shown to you in the explanation view
- Storage: Document data is stored temporarily to allow you to access your analysis. It is automatically deleted after 30 days of inactivity.
Security note: Documents are stored encrypted at rest. Only you can access your document analyses through your account.
How We Use AI
OpenClauses uses artificial intelligence to analyze your documents. Here's what you should know:
What the AI does
- Breaks down complex legal language into plain English
- Identifies important clauses and their implications
- Flags potential risks and unusual terms
- Answers your questions about specific clauses
Important limitations
- The AI provides educational information, not legal advice
- AI analysis may not catch every issue — human review is still important
- For significant legal decisions, consult a licensed attorney
AI training
We do not use your documents to train our AI models. Your documents are processed through the AI, but they don't become part of the AI's training data.
Data Storage & Deletion
We believe in keeping data only as long as necessary:
| Data Type | Retention Period |
|---|---|
| Account information | Until you delete your account |
| Document analyses | 30 days after last access, or until you delete |
| Uploaded document files | Deleted immediately after processing |
| Usage analytics | Aggregated and anonymized after 90 days |
| Feedback submissions | Until resolved, then deleted within 1 year |
